Accountability

I’ve realized over the past few years that lack of accountability is the most common factor among people that puts the kibosh on their efforts and ultimately their results.

Think about it, being held accountable is what creates effort.  When we were kids and young adults we had to behave and get good grades because we were held accountable by our parents and the fear they put in us if we didn’t do what was expected.  As an adult you are held accountable by your paycheck and/or your boss.  You need to perform and produce in order to get your paycheck and keep your job.

Unfortunately most people today have no accountability when it comes to their health.  Many have the mentality of “it won’t happen to me”.  Well, I’m here to tell you that “it” can  happen to you and the chances are even greater if you do not take action and work on your health.  Everyone is so reactive when it comes to their health when we need to be proactive.

Where’s your accountability?  Do you have children?  Do you have a spouse? If so, there is your accountability!  My biggest fear, second to anything happening to my children, is something happening to me which would prevent me from being with my children or being able to play with my kids.  I want to be physically able to “hang” with my kids on some level for as long as I can.  I also,  do not want to be a burden on my children or wife as I get older.  Because of that I try to take steps to limit the chances of that happening.  Sure, not everything is avoidable but if something does happen at least I will have the peace of mind knowing that I made a legitimate effort.

What would make you accountable?  Is it a promise to yourself, telling others about a goal you plan on achieving, writing a mission statement and reading it everyday, making a promise to your children, your best friend?  Think about it, figure it out!

Think of this.  It’s 10 years in the future and you have steadily progressed, or should I say declined, physically in the same direction you have  in the previous 10 years.  Does that sound like somewhere you want to be?  If you’ve put on 20 or 30 lbs in the past 10 years, then think of yourself as being an additional 20 or 30 lbs heavier in the next 10.  The next time you hear a story of someone coming down with a life changing illness, put yourself in their place and think of how that would affect you and your family.  Think of how you would feel knowing that you did not do anything to reduce the risks of that happening to you.  Don’t wait until it’s too late.  It will only get harder the longer you put if off.

I know of people with young children who have had heart attacks, bypass surgery, under the age of 45 and return right back to their “normal” lifestyle as if they were fixed now and have nothing to worry about.  How can that not scare the shit out of someone and make them think about being around for their children and/or spouse.  How can that not make someone accountable for their health?  I’ve had many people come into the gym over the years who, at 50 or 60, wanted to get “back in shape”.  Unfortunately for these people, it was actually too late from a mental standpoint, and somewhat from a physical standpoint.   Their lives revolved around the things that made them unhealthy and they weren’t willing to change the life they were accustomed too.   They couldn’t do even the most basic things like stand from a sitting position, or get off the floor without help.  Their habits were so ingrained at that point that making the changes they needed to, both mentally and physically, was just too much for them to handle.  Seeing this first hand and thinking about that happening to me is what holds me accountable.  Like I said, something may happen to me, I’m aware not everything is preventable but knowing that I at least made the effort is what is important to me and should be for you.

The name of our business is “B-Strong”.  Be  physically strong,  be mentally and emotionally strong.  Don’t let “things” dictate the direction your life and your health take.  “You” control your life.  Food isn’t “stronger” than you, put down the shit and pick up a vegetable.   The TV isn’t “stronger” than you, get off the couch and do some pushups.  The computer isn’t “stronger” than you, get offline and do something.   Our business slogan is “Train for Life”.  Train for “your” life.  Train so you can live a healthy enjoyable life. Train for your whole life.
